What fuels the solar wind particles on their way to the Earth and beyond?
Written by Dr. Shirsh Lata Soni, Postdoctoral Research Fellow at University of Iowa, IA, USA A wind that never stops… We know the Sun is the main source of energy…
Understanding CMEs Collisions: A Key to Protecting Earth from Future Solar Storms
As we all know, the Sun is the primary source of energy that supports life on our planet, and this energy reaches us in the form of solar radiation. In addition to this, the Sun also occasionally releases massive bursts of charged particles (mainly electrons and protons) into space, accompanied by powerful magnetic field lines. These spectacular outbursts are known as coronal mass ejections (CMEs). These energetic particles are like bullets, if they were to reach us directly, they could damage our cells, increase the risk of cancer, and even alter human and animal DNA.
New Breakthrough on Solar Wind Unveiled by India’s Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM)!
You may wonder that based on their limited observation, in the early days, people thought the Sun had an atmosphere, like Earth, experiencing seasons and even forming clouds. These clouds were thought to be responsible for the dark spots observed on the Sun’s surface (now the same is known the sunspot, a dark spot appears on the sun’s surface due to low temperature region).
